Required Medical Documentation:
Everyone should have the below documentation at your Doctor’s Office, or if you stayed in student housing at any point in college.
If you are selected for the program, then there is a mandatory 2.5 hours UC Davis Health System Orientation at UCDMC for general hospital protocols, patient privacy information, and safety instruction.
This mandatory hospital orientation is required by Federal and State laws and will take place at UCDMC. Please view the important dates in the application packet to check for the orientation date. This orientation is mandatory and must be completed at the time indicated. We cannot reschedule or alter this time and date. If you have class, we can provide you with documentation that states you have participated in the orientation, but we cannot excuse you from the orientation. If necessary, discuss this with your instructors beforehand.
NOTE: We understand that some of you have volunteered at UCDMC in the past, but you still MUST attend this orientation in order to be in this program and receive your badge.
After the selection process, there is also a mandatory Surgery Academy held at the UC Davis School of Medicine which you must attend before you are able to begin. There will be only one Surgery Academy scheduled and you must attend it at its scheduled time. If you do not attend the Surgery Academy, then you cannot be part of the program. The Surgery Academy is an intensive 2-day orientation. During the Academy you will be instructed on how to conduct yourself inside of the hospital, learn about anatomy/physiology, disease, and medical terminology, and surgery. The Academy will be conducted by physicians from the Department of Surgery physicians and UC Davis School of Medicine medical students.
Each month you will receive an email instructing you to pick the date and time of your shifts through our online scheduling software. Through the software you will be able to pick the shifts you will attend for the entire upcoming month. Shifts are on a first come, first serve basis, so sign up as soon as you get the monthly email.
You will be allowed one unexcused absence during the duration of the program. Any further absences must be accompanied by relevant documentation such as a doctor’s note as in the case of illness. Having more than one unexcused absence will mean possible removal from the program until the issue is resolved. The reason for this is because you are taking away the opportunity from someone else.
Your final monthly schedule, which indicates which services you have been assigned to, will be e-mailed to you after you have selected your shifts; therefore, check your e-mail frequently. If you forget to check your e-mail and miss a shift then it is considered unexcused!
NOTE: The scheduling committee will NOT change the time or date that you selected. It is your responsibility to know your schedule before signing up for shifts, and only select shifts that you will be able to attend.
You will attend mandatory biweekly Saturday meetings while in the program. These meetings will include additional educational components that will be presented to you by medical students, UCDMC faculty, and UCDMC physicians. Some of the modules include practicing suturing techniques, a journal/book club, and surgical simulations. More information about these meetings will be presented to you during the Surgical Academy.
The dates below are mandatory during your session. Due to federal and state laws you will not be able to participate in the program if you do not attend the Hospital Orientation and Surgery Academy. No absences will be accepted!

The program has an academic component that serves to enrich your experience in the program by expanding your knowledge in the field of medicine.
The academic component consists of reading and analyzing assigned books and articles related to medicine. You will be required to take quizzes and turn in written responses concerning the assigned reading. You will also perform a final case presentation at the end of the program in front of your peers. To help you better succeed on these assignments, you will be given a rubric assigning letter grades to corresponding qualities of work.
At the beginning of the program we will be assigned a list of articles and books and the dates you are to have them read. The academic component is NOT optional and you will be responsible for completing the assignments thoroughly and thoughtfully. You will be given grades and feedback based on your academic performance.
The academic letter grade does not appear on any official transcripts unless you choose to apply for academic unit credit (in the form of internship credits) at your academic institution. If you choose to receive unit credit for the course you will be given a Pass/No Pass grade based on your performance in the internship.
The academic portion is not to be taken lightly. It requires time outside of the program meetings and shifts, as would any other academic class.
Books: The assigned books (3-4 total) are selected from the New York Times best sellers list. They are easy and enjoyable to read and are relevant to medicine. In the past, we have selected books by Malcolm Gladwell, Atul Gawande MD, and Jerome Groopman MD.
Articles: The articles are selected from journals such as Scientific American, Time Magazine, and Articles on Surgery and Medical Education. They cover a range of topics to introduce you to many of medicine’s current issues.
