Our Mission

The UC Davis Pre-Medical Surgical Internship, Mentorship, and Research Program is a unique and rigorous experience that exposes participants to the field of surgery by immersing them in a professional medical environment. Program components are designed to introduce the academic and clinical activities typically experienced by physicians and medical students. This competitive program is intended for individuals who have demonstrated their interest in pursuing a career as a physician. We pride ourselves in accepting participants who are responsible, mature, and committed.

Thank you for your interest in the UC Davis Health System Department of Surgery Pre-Medical Surgical Internship & Mentorship Program. This opportunity is open to all pre-medical students who wish to be mentored by faculty, residents, interns, and medical students in the nationally recognized UC Davis Health System Department of Surgery. There are three cycles available for application throughout the year: Spring (January-May/June), Summer (May/June-August/September), and Fall (August/September-December).

This program is open to ALL pre-medical students regardless of year, academic standing, or academic institution. If you are interested in a career in medicine then you are eligible to apply!

All undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate students from all institutions who plan to apply to medical school are eligible. This includes community college, CSU, UC, private university, and graduating high school students who are at least 17 years old.

The site for the program is the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. This 650-bed hospital is the major teaching affiliate for the UC Davis School of Medicine. The hospital serves an area of tremendous diversity in both cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is a Level 1 Trauma Center and home to the only burn center, children’s hospital, and transplant center in Northern California. It is one of the five busiest Trauma Centers in the country. Their focus of service to those most in need underpins the teaching activities in this setting.

The Department of Surgery consists of the following surgical subspecialties:

  • Burn Surgery
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Otolaryngology Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Surgical Consultation
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Trauma & Emergency Surgery
  • Transplant Surgery
  • Urological Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery

In this program, you will be interacting with physicians in the Department of Surgery and observing them through every step of patient care. You will experience what surgeons do on a daily basis as you encounter patient-physician interactions in the clinics, pre and post-operative units, operating rooms, and bedside meetings during rounds.

This is an extraordinarily unique opportunity.  Maturity, attentiveness, flexibility, and the ability to follow written and verbal directions are qualities that are absolutely imperative to prevent hindrance of patient care. Professionalism is essential. The surgeons, although enthusiastic about having student pre-medical students, are voluntarily participating in this program.  Thus, please be respectful at all times.

Be advised that this program operates under the direction of the Chairman of Surgery and solely dependent on said discretion, which includes but is not limited to start and end dates, hospital shift start and end times, requirements and/or the process of selection, student guidelines, and policies set forth by UC Davis Health Systems, state, and federal laws.
